Wigan Athletic stretched their unbeaten run to six games after a 1-1 draw with Blackpool in the final home fixture of the 2024/25 season.
It took just three minutes for Latics to get on the scoresheet in bizarre fashion. Jon Mellish, making only his fourth start, volleyed a cross from the left by-line that somehow squeezed past Harry Tyrer at his near post — giving Mellish his first goal in Latics colours.
Blackpool, managed by former Wigan boss Steve Bruce, responded well. Jason Kerr had to clear CJ Hamilton’s header off the line, and despite several chances for the Latics to double the lead — notably through Maleace Asamoah Jr — the visitors kept pushing.
After the break, Blackpool enjoyed the majority of possession, and they were awarded a penalty when Owen Dale brought down Hamilton in the box. Lee Evans, a former Latics midfielder, stepped up to convert from the spot in the 74th minute, ensuring the points were shared.
Both sides pushed for a late winner — with Sam Tickle making some crucial saves for the Latics — but it wasn’t to be, as Wigan signed off at the Brick Community Stadium with a hard-fought draw.
