10 July 2025 – Wigan Athletic defender Toby Sibbick has completed a permanent move to fellow League One side Burton Albion, signing a two-year contract with the Brewers, which includes an option for a further year.
Fresh Start at the Pirelli
Sibbick’s departure comes after a season at the Brick Community Stadium, where he made 31 league appearances during the 2024–25 campaign. His versatility and composure at the back made him a reliable figure under Shaun Maloney, but he now seeks a fresh challenge with Burton as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
Burton Albion manager Gary Bowyer hailed the defender’s arrival, noting his pace, physical presence, and one-on-one ability as key attributes that will benefit the club in the new season.
Sibbick’s Journey So Far
The 25-year-old began his career with AFC Wimbledon, progressing through their youth system before making his League One debut. His performances earned him a move to Barnsley in 2019, where he gained Championship experience and played a part in their 2020–21 play-off campaign.
Loan spells followed at Heart of Midlothian and Belgian side KV Oostende before Sibbick returned to Hearts permanently. He then moved south of the border again in 2024 to join Wigan Athletic.
On the international stage, Sibbick declared for Uganda in early 2024 and made his debut later that year in a 2–2 draw with Ghana.
A New Chapter
This move to Burton represents a new chapter for Sibbick as he continues to develop his career. From Wigan’s perspective, the transfer fee—undisclosed—offers the opportunity to reallocate resources as preparations continue for the 2025–26 season.
