Match Overview / Performance Analysis
It was Wigan Athletics’ afternoon this Saturday, as Ryan Lowe’s men carried out a classy & structured performance against a depleted and miserable Peterborough United. The Latics won by 2-0, and the Brick Community Stadium was certainly in high spirits, as Wigan clinched their second win in the third game of the 25/26 EFL League One Campaign. A result that puts Wigan 8th in the table, and it’s got the idea of promotion on the end of everybody’s tongue, but, it’s still very early days, and as much as the idea of promotion is compelling we should just take every game one at a time.
Wigan’s performance
There was high emphasis on Wigan’s need to get back to winning ways this afternoon, and the lads certainly exceeded expectation, winning 2-0. The game kicked off at 3pm, and Wigan made a very comfortable start, with the lads controlling possession of the ball comfortably, and getting wingers: Joe Hungbo & Fraser Murray into the mix as soon as possible, and it certainly was to avail, as Murray effortlessly beat Peterborough left back, Harley Mills, and whipped a pinpoint cross into the box, which was met by Wigan No.9 Christian Saydee, and he rose like a Salmon, to bullet it in with his head, giving Wigan a one nil lead inside 5 minutes, also providing Saydee with a first Wigan goal. Kicking back off, Wigan’s classy football made for a fantastic watch, and after multiple chances we received a corner in the 27th Minute, and it was delivered in by Joe Hungbo, cleared away initially it fell to Fraser Murray, who forced a huge save from Peterborough Goalkeeper, Vicente Reyes, but the rebound fell to Jason Kerr, who calmly headed the ball into the bottom right corner, entirely out of reach, to make it Wigan 2, Peterborough 0, with 28 minutes on the clock. Wigan were easily able to carry their lead into the half time break, with first half expectations massively succeeded. The second 45 was underway, and for the majority of the period, Peterborough were able to outweigh Wigan in terms of possession, but all action in the box came to nothing, with Darren Ferguson’s side unable to do anything with all possession, something that as Wigan fans we all experienced on a daily basis last season. Notable Wigan subs were Maleace Asamoah & Paul Mullin, both brought on to encourage a third goal, but just unable to do so. The referees Whistle blew for a final time, and superb defensive work from the lads, gave us a mighty 2-0 win!
Wigan Athletic Player Ratings
Sam Tickle – 6.5/10: Some decent saves made by Wigan’s number 1, but nothing a player of his immense magnitude would find difficut. Will Aimson – 7.5/10: Back into action after serving his suspension & I for one was delighted with his performance, fantastic attitude & an even better no nonsense attitude today, completely dictated Wigan’s back 3. Jason Kerr – 7/10: The reliable as ever Scotsman delivers again, extending Wigan’s lead with a calm and classy header, certainly didn’t put a foot wrong today. Morgan Fox – 7/10: A very good debut from the newbie, Fox’s mixture of experience and class was on show from the start to finish, helped keep the back 3 attentive & structured. Tyrese Francois – 7/10: A player I for one, was unimpressed with last season he certainly has been pulling the strings on the football shaped Violin, with a very notable performance today, with plenty of interceptions and decisive passing, a midfield performance to be very happy with. Ryan Trevitt – 7/10: Trevitt’s loan spell has gotten off to a very impressive start, and I feel that the sky’s the limit this season. Callum Wright – 6/10: Wasn’t involved as much as other players, but by no means a poor performance. Fraser Murray – 9.5/10: The best Wigan player I have seen in a long time, and I mean a LONG time, his speed and charisma is what we’ve been lacking out wide in recent seasons, and his creativity is second to none, a sensational performance. Joe Hungbo – 7.5/10: Hungbo’s creativity has been on par with Murray’s and the pair seem to lack no ability in their respected positions. Dara Costelloe – 6.5/10: Not involved as much as we hoped although, was bought down during a 1v1 and didn’t see a foul given, absolutely robbed Christian Saydee – 8/10: A first goal, a bullet header, need I say more? We may have finally our first consistent No.9 since Charlie Wyke. (Substitutes) Jensen Weir – N/A Luke Robinson – N/A Maleace Asamoah – N/A Paul Mullin – N/A
Attendance & Atmosphere
Wigan Athletic – The attendance today stood at, 8,748, which is nothing succeeding what we usually average, but when it comes to atmosphere, I was very impressed, as supporters they’re were some good moments of pure chanting mania, more than usual If I may add.
Peterborough United – Peterborough brought 524 visiting fans, which on paper isn’t a lot, but based on the sides recent form, this is certainly justified, and their was plenty of moments of anger among the fans as they were unable to create any real goal scoring chances. Fair play to all 524 fans, who made the 3 hour journey down from Peterborough.
