LATICS NEWS
Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 October 2026
1. Who we are
Latics.News is an independent, fan-run Wigan Athletic website providing news, opinion, match coverage and supporter community features. Latics.News is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by Wigan Athletic Football Club, the EFL, Premier League or The FA.
For privacy enquiries, please use our contact page.
2. Information we collect
Depending on how you use Latics.News, we may collect and process:
- account details such as username, display name, email address and profile picture;
- optional supporter-profile information;
- email-verification and account-status information;
- Community topics, replies, reactions, reports and moderation records;
- Match Centre votes, exact-score predictions and Prediction League entries;
- notification and account preferences;
- technical and security information such as IP address, session information, login attempts, anti-spam signals and rate-limit events;
- information received from a connected AwayDay account as described below.
Passwords are handled using WordPress password hashing and are not stored by Latics.News in readable form.
3. AwayDay-connected accounts
You can choose to connect Latics.News to an AwayDay account. When connected, Latics.News may receive information including your AwayDay account identifier, username, display name, profile image, verified email address, grounds visited, matches logged, Match Passport statistics, seasonal statistics and saved/planned fixture state.
Latics.News may send AwayDay the information needed to connect the services, reserve a supporter username and perform actions you request, such as saving or logging a fixture. Your AwayDay password is never shared with Latics.News. The connection uses secure authorisation tokens rather than shared passwords or login cookies.
While connected, selected profile information and football statistics may be synchronised from AwayDay as the master copy. Latics.News-specific content such as forum posts, predictions and moderation status remains managed by Latics.News.
4. Username reservations
If you create a Latics.News-only account, your chosen username may be reserved with AwayDay so somebody else cannot take the same supporter handle before you decide whether to join AwayDay. A reservation does not create an AwayDay account. Unverified reservations may expire if the Latics.News account is not verified.
5. How we use information
We use personal information to operate accounts and profiles, verify email addresses, provide Community and Match Centre features, run the Prediction League, connect AwayDay when requested, prevent spam and abuse, enforce Community rules, send account/security emails and improve the service.
6. Legal bases
Depending on the processing, we may rely on performance of a contract, legitimate interests (including security, moderation and service improvement), consent where required, and compliance with legal obligations.
7. Public information
Information you deliberately publish may be visible publicly, including your username, display name, profile picture, profile information, Community posts/replies, reactions, Prediction League position and supporter badges. AwayDay statistics are only displayed where the relevant sharing setting allows it. Your email address is not displayed publicly by Latics.News.
8. Providers and connected services
We use third parties where necessary to operate the service. These may include our hosting provider, transactional email services (currently including SpaceMail), anti-bot/security services such as Cloudflare Turnstile or firewall tools where enabled, AwayDay for connected-account and football-data features, and Google services for advertising or analytics where enabled and permitted by your cookie choices.
We do not sell your personal information.
9. Email
We may send emails needed to operate your account, including verification, security and account notices. Marketing messages will only be sent where there is an appropriate legal basis.
10. Cookies and similar technologies
Latics.News uses essential cookies and similar storage for account sessions, security and preferences. Analytics, advertising and other non-essential technologies may also be used where enabled and subject to applicable consent requirements. See our Cookie Policy for more information.
11. Retention
We keep account information while an account remains active and for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the service. Security and moderation records may be retained for a reasonable period to prevent abuse and protect the Community. If an account is deleted, associated personal information will be deleted or anonymised where reasonably possible, except where retention is required for legal, security or legitimate operational reasons.
12. Security
We use measures including HTTPS, secure password hashing, email verification, login/registration rate limiting, anti-bot checks, secure OAuth authorisation and session revocation for banned accounts. No online system can guarantee absolute security.
13. Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights to access, correct or delete information, restrict processing, receive certain data in a portable form, object to certain processing, and withdraw consent where consent is relied upon. You can contact us using the link above. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
14. Children and young users
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Latics.News account. If you are under 18, we encourage you to review these policies with a parent or guardian. We aim to use privacy-protective defaults and collect only information needed for the service.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the service or our use of information changes. The latest version will always be published on this page.
