Match Preview | Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic | EFL League One

Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic brings Latics back to West Yorkshire on Saturday 24 October, with a 12:30pm kick-off at the Accu Stadium. After Tuesday’s defeat at Oxford United, Gary Caldwell’s side need another response against a Town team sitting second in League One.

The win over Reading gave us something to build on, but that momentum did not last long. Christian Saydee’s equaliser at Oxford briefly offered hope of a point before Latics fell behind again. Saturday brings a different challenge: a confident home side who have scored six times in their last two games.

Wigan Athletic: 24th

Latics remain bottom of the table with seven points from ten matches. Seven defeats already tells its own story, but the lack of goals is just as concerning. We have scored only seven in the league, and two across the last five games.

Scott Hogan’s winner against Reading was welcome, as was the clean sheet. However, Oxford brought another reminder that getting back into a game is only part of the job. Saydee’s goal gave Wigan a foothold, but it did not produce anything to take home.

There is a selection decision up front now. Saydee has given Caldwell something to think about, while Hogan has also scored recently. Whichever striker starts needs support close enough to make possession count. If the ball keeps coming straight back, this could become a long afternoon.

A point away to a side near the top would be useful. To get it, Latics need to stay organised without allowing the match to become attack against defence. There have to be moments when we give Huddersfield something to worry about.

Huddersfield Town: 2nd

Martin Drury’s side come into the weekend with 22 points from eleven matches. Six wins, four draws and just one defeat have put Town among the early promotion contenders, and their recent results make this a difficult trip.

Huddersfield followed a 2-0 win at Plymouth with a 4-1 home victory over Peterborough on Tuesday. Joe Taylor scored twice in that win and now has eight league goals. His movement will demand concentration from Wigan’s back line throughout the game.

Town have taken ten points from their last five league matches, scoring twelve goals along the way. Their only defeat in that run came at Bromley, before a win at Burton and a draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The hosts will expect to make the running, but that also gives Latics a clear task. We need to disrupt their rhythm, compete for second balls and use possession well enough to stop the pressure building. Giving away an early goal would make an already tough assignment harder.

Head-to-Head Record

Wigan Wins: 14

Draws: 9

Huddersfield Wins: 15

The clubs have met 38 times in competitive fixtures. Town hold a narrow overall advantage, but Latics are unbeaten in the last three meetings. Jensen Weir scored the only goal when we last met at the Brick Community Stadium in February.

Last five meetings, most recent first:
28 February 2026: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Huddersfield Town
13 December 2025: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Wigan Athletic
25 February 2025: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Huddersfield Town
3 December 2024: Huddersfield Town 1-0 Wigan Athletic
11 February 2023: Wigan Athletic 1-0 Huddersfield Town

For a happier memory of this away trip, there is always the 4-1 FA Cup win in 2013. Callum McManaman, Arouna Koné twice and James McArthur were on the scoresheet during that unforgettable cup run. Saturday is a different occasion, but this ground has given us something to celebrate before.

Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic: Team News

Fraser Murray’s dismissal at Oxford leaves Caldwell needing to plan for his absence. That creates another decision in the attacking positions, alongside the question of whether Saydee’s impact from the bench earns him a start.

Hogan remains an option after his winner against Reading. The balance around the striker matters just as much: Wigan need runners beyond the ball and somebody available for the first pass out of defence.

For Huddersfield, Taylor is the obvious attacking threat after his double against Peterborough. Final availability and both starting line-ups will be confirmed closer to kick-off; the selection discussion here should not be read as a confirmed team sheet.

Curtis’ Prediction: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Wigan Athletic

💭 “With our defensive record this season I cannot see us keeping a clean sheet especially when Town have Taylor who was superb for us last season.”

ChatGPT Prediction: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Wigan Athletic

💭 “Huddersfield’s scoring form and home advantage make them favourites. Wigan have reasons to believe they can compete, particularly after three unbeaten meetings with Town, but their recent goal return leaves little room for defensive mistakes. Latics can make a game of it; the hosts look more likely to find the extra goal.”
