Former Wigan Athletic hero Will Grigg completes Forest Green Rovers move

Former Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg has completed a permanent move to Forest Green Rovers following his departure from Chesterfield.

The 35-year-old has joined the Gloucestershire outfit on a free transfer, signing a contract until June 2028 as he begins the latest chapter of his career.

Grigg’s departure from Chesterfield was confirmed on Friday afternoon, bringing an end to his three-year spell with the Spireites, where he played an important role in the club’s return to the Football League.

Grigg departs Chesterfield after successful spell

Having joined Chesterfield from MK Dons in the summer of 2023, Grigg quickly established himself as an important figure under former Wigan manager Paul Cook.

The Northern Ireland international scored 25 goals in his debut campaign as Chesterfield stormed to the National League title, securing promotion back to League Two.

He went on to score another 14 goals during the following season, although his opportunities became increasingly limited during the latter stages of his time at the club.

Grigg leaves Chesterfield having scored more than 40 goals across his three seasons in Derbyshire.

Forest Green have confirmed that the experienced forward will wear the number 31 shirt and is immediately available for selection ahead of their trip to Barrow.

A name Wigan Athletic supporters will never forget

For Latics supporters, Grigg remains one of the club’s most memorable strikers of the modern era.

Arriving from Brentford in 2015, he became an instant favourite, scoring 25 league goals during his debut season as Wigan secured the 2015/16 League One title.

His performances also inspired the famous ‘Will Grigg’s on Fire’ chant, which went on to become a football anthem heard across Europe during Euro 2016.

Grigg played another crucial role in Wigan’s second League One title triumph in 2017/18, scoring 19 league goals as Paul Cook’s side returned to the Championship.

However, his most iconic moment in a Latics shirt came in February 2018.

Facing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round, Grigg produced a clinical 79th-minute finish to secure an unforgettable 1-0 victory at the Brick Community Stadium.

It remains one of the greatest nights in the club’s recent history.

Grigg eventually departed Wigan for Sunderland in January 2019, having scored 65 goals in 150 appearances across all competitions.

A fresh challenge at Forest Green Rovers

Now 35, Grigg will be hoping to rediscover his goalscoring form as he takes on a new challenge at Forest Green.

With more than 500 Football League appearances to his name, the experienced striker brings plenty of know-how to his new surroundings.

Although it has been over seven years since he departed Wigan, Grigg’s contribution to two title-winning campaigns and that famous victory over Manchester City ensures his place in Latics folklore is firmly secured.

For Wigan supporters, there will always be only one Will Grigg.
