Oldham Athletic have secured a season-long loan deal for promising Wigan Athletic midfielder Kai Payne, as announced by Wigan Athletic on July 8, 2025.
A product of the academy
Born on 26 November 2004, Payne joined Wigan Athletic’s academy in 2018 after leaving Liverpool’s youth setup. He earned professional terms in November 2022 and impressed enough to be named in the senior squad, making his league debut in August 2024 and signing a new deal through 2027.
Development through loans
The combative, technically skilled midfielder spent time on loan at non-league side Mossley in early 2023, scoring twice in nine matches, followed by a short loan at Oldham Athletic during the 2024–25 season.
Last season’s impact at Boundary Park
During his previous stint with Oldham, Payne featured in 4 games. His dynamic link play and work-rate quickly made him a favourite under manager Micky Mellon. “He gave us energy, control in midfield, and that extra bit of quality in tight games,” Mellon said.
A clear path for progress
With first-team opportunities limited at The Brick, this extended loan provides Payne with the vital game time he needs. Wigan are confident this move will foster further growth under Mellon’s guidance.
Fan reactions
Oldham supporters have responded enthusiastically on social media, calling Payne a “proper baller” who perfectly suits the team’s style of play.
