Wigan

Match Preview | Wigan Athletic vs MK Dons | EFL League One

Wigan Athletic welcome MK Dons to the Brick Community Stadium on Wednesday night for the first midweek league fixture of the 2026/27 season.

And, despite only three games being played, both sides arrive with very different problems to solve.

For the Latics, it’s already a case of needing to stop the bad run of form.

Wigan have lost all three of their opening League One fixtures, beginning with a 3-2 defeat away at Cambridge United before suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Leyton Orient and, most recently, a late 1-0 loss at AFC Wimbledon.

That leaves Gary Caldwell’s side bottom of League One without a single point, with just two goals scored across their opening three matches.

The defeat at Wimbledon will have particularly stung. With the game seemingly heading towards a goalless draw, Myles Hippolyte struck in the 88th minute to hand Wimbledon their first win of the campaign and leave Wigan empty-handed once again.

But if Wigan’s start has been disastrous, their opponents’ opening three games have been almost the complete opposite.

MK Dons are unbeaten.

The newly promoted side have drawn all three of their League One fixtures, taking points away at Oxford United, drawing 1-1 with Huddersfield Town and then holding Leicester City to a goalless draw at Stadium MK on Saturday.

Three games. Three draws. Three points.

So while Wigan are searching for their first point, MK Dons are searching for their first win.

That makes Wednesday night a fascinating early-season meeting between two sides who, despite sitting at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, are both desperate to change the narrative.

For Wigan, it’s about finally getting something on the board.

For MK Dons, it’s about turning promising resilience into three points.

And with the first midweek league night of the season bringing the lights on at the Brick, something has to give.

Wigan Athletic: 24th

Wigan’s start to the season is not what anybody around the club would have wanted.

The Latics were beaten in Cambridge on the opening day despite Sonny Perkins and Akeel Higgins finding the net in the second half, before failing to score against Leyton Orient and Wimbledon.

There were positives to take from parts of the Cambridge performance, but three defeats from three means the pressure is already beginning to build.

Caldwell knows the situation, though, having overseen a significant turnaround after taking charge last season. Wigan finished 16th last campaign after moving away from the relegation picture under his management, so Wednesday represents an early opportunity to remind supporters that this season’s opening results do not necessarily define what is to come.

The big question is simple:

Where are the goals going to come from?

Wigan have scored just twice in three league matches, and neither of those goals were enough to earn anything from the opening-day defeat at Cambridge.

A home game under the lights could be exactly what they need — but another defeat would make an already difficult start considerably more uncomfortable.

MK Dons: 16th

MK Dons arrive in Greater Manchester with a rather unusual record.

Played three. Won none. Lost none.

Paul Warne’s newly promoted side began life back in League One with a 2-2 draw at Oxford United, followed that up with a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield and then produced their best defensive display yet by holding Leicester to 0-0.

The clean sheet against Leicester will have been particularly encouraging, with goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray making seven saves as the Dons stood firm.

There is a clear attacking threat too, with Aaron Collins already having scored twice in the league this season.

MK Dons were also one of the strongest away sides in League Two last season, winning 11 of their 23 away matches during their promotion campaign.

So whilst Wigan desperately need a win, the visitors have already shown that they are capable of making life difficult for teams at this level.

Wednesday could be the night one of those two records finally changes.

Head-to-Head Record

Wigan Wins: 4

Draws: 4

MK Dons Wins: 2

Curtis’ Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-1 MK Dons

💭”I’m going for a 1-1 draw.

I think Wigan will finally get themselves on the scoresheet and, with the game being at the Brick, I can see them putting in a much better performance than we’ve seen in the opening three league games.

I’m also expecting our new signing Whitworth to get a chance, and personally I’d like to see him given a go over Walsh. I think Whitworth could prove to be the better option, but with a new goalkeeper coming into a defence that is still finding its feet, I don’t think everything will click immediately.

MK Dons have also shown that they’re a difficult side to beat, drawing all three of their league games so far, including a goalless draw against Leicester.

I think Wigan’s urgency gets them a goal, but it’ll take time for the new additions to properly gel. So, for me, 1-1 hopefully the first point of many rather than another frustrating night.”

Charlie’s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-1 MK Dons

Charlie of LaticsZone‘s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-0 MK Dons

ChatGPT: Wigan Athletic 1-1 MK Dons

💭 “I can see this being a frustrating one for Wigan. The Latics desperately need something after three straight league defeats, but MK Dons have shown plenty of resilience with three draws from three, including a 0-0 against Leicester.

I think Wigan will have the urgency and home advantage to finally get on the scoresheet and take something, but I’m not convinced they’ll have enough attacking quality yet to turn it into their first win. 1-1 feels like the sensible call — although a late Wigan winner wouldn’t surprise me given how much pressure they’ll be under.”

Grok: Wigan Athletic 1-1 MK Dons

💭 “Wigan get on the scoresheet at home for the first time in the league but cannot find a winner against a well-drilled MK Dons side content with another point.”

Gemini: Wigan Athletic 1-1 MK Dons

💭 “Expect Wigan Athletic to break their goal-drought on home soil, but MK Dons’ resilient defensive structure will likely keep them compact enough to extend their unbeaten draw streak in a tight 1–1 stalemate.”
