Wigan

Match Preview | Wigan Athletic vs Reading | EFL League One

Latics return to the Brick Community Stadium this Saturday as Reading visit for a 3pm kick-off. There will be a familiar face in the opposition dugout, with Leam Richardson back at the club he led to the League One title, but Wigan have more pressing concerns than the reunion. After another disappointing afternoon at Stevenage, Gary Caldwell’s side need a performance that gives the home crowd something to get behind.

Wigan Athletic: 24th

The Latics head into the weekend rooted to the bottom of League One after a difficult start to the campaign, picking up just four points from their opening eight matches. Gary Caldwell’s side have struggled particularly in front of goal, scoring only five times so far, and last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Stevenage only added to the pressure. With a tough run of fixtures coming up, Saturday feels like a big opportunity for Wigan to finally start turning performances into points.

Reading FC: 16th

Reading arrive at the Brick Community Stadium in a far healthier position, sitting sixth in the table following an impressive start under Leam Richardson. The Royals come into the game full of confidence after thrashing MK Dons 5-1 last weekend, a result which lifted them into the play-off places and underlined their attacking threat. They have also been among the division’s highest scorers so far, making them a dangerous test for a Wigan side badly in need of a response.

Head-to-Head Record

Wigan Wins: 20

Draws: 12

Reading Wins: 24

Reading won both league meetings last season:

  • 10 February 2026: Wigan Athletic 1–2 Reading
  • 28 March 2026: Reading 3–0 Wigan Athletic

That gives the Royals five goals to Wigan’s one across those two games. It does not decide what happens this weekend, but Latics will need a better showing to prevent another frustrating afternoon against Richardson’s side.

Curtis’ Prediction: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Reading

💭”It is hard to be confident given Wigan’s start to the season, and I really cannot see us keeping a clean sheet at the minute. Defensively we have looked vulnerable and Reading have enough going forward to punish that, but the Latics have to get a win eventually. If we can start on the front foot, create chances and actually take them, I think two goals could be enough to edge it. I’m going for a much-needed 2-1 Wigan win.”

Charlie’s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 0-0 Reading

💭”A season which so far has been painstakingly dire, 4 points in 8 games, 11 points behind the opponents, a 0-0 would be the most Wigan result. A draw here would build some confidence for the tough run coming up for Latics, but as they say, time will tell.”

ChatGPT: Wigan Athletic 0-2 Reading

💭 “It is difficult to look past the visitors given the contrasting starts to the season. Reading arrive in strong form and carrying far more of a goal threat, while Wigan’s struggles in front of goal have continued to cost them. Home advantage may help the Latics keep things competitive, but Reading should have enough quality to take all three points.”

Grok: Wigan Athletic 1-2 Reading

💭 “Reading’s superior firepower and recent form (including a 5-1 win last time out) should be enough to overcome a Wigan side rooted to the bottom of the table and struggling badly for goals.”

Gemini: Wigan Athletic 1-2 Reading

💭 “Reading enter the match in fine form with 22 league goals scored this season and four consecutive victories in their head-to-head record against Wigan, making them strong favorites to take the win away from home despite Wigan’s home advantage.”
