Wigan Athletic U18s Make History with 2-1 Win at Bramley-Moore Dock

Wigan Athletic U18s made history on Monday evening as they secured a 2-1 victory over Everton U18s in the first-ever fixture played at the brand-new Everton Stadium, Bramley-Moore Dock. A blistering four-minute spell in the first half, featuring goals from Harrison Rimmer and Cole Simms, proved to be the difference, despite a late penalty from Ray Roberts.
Marc Maddocks’ side came into the match with confidence, and it was evident from the outset. After a few early chances, Latics found the breakthrough in the 13th minute when Rimmer latched onto a loose ball before curling it into the far corner for a memorable goal. Just four minutes later, the visitors doubled their advantage when Simms expertly finished off a pinpoint cross from Harrison Bettoni, making no mistake from close range.
Everton responded well after going two goals down, with Braiden Graham coming close when his low strike hit the post, but Latics continued to dominate the majority of the first half.
In the second half, Maddocks made several changes, giving valuable minutes to players such as Elijah Igiehon, Oscar Harris, and Sam Bolland. The Toffees began the second period with a renewed intensity, but Matteo Spinelli and the Latics defence were resolute, with Alex Hughes making a crucial clearance off the line to deny a goal-bound effort from Graham.
Despite some late pressure from the hosts, including a penalty in the 88th minute converted by Roberts, Latics held their nerve and saw out the win. Substitute goalkeeper Jake Spaven also made vital saves to preserve the lead, including a brilliant stop to deny Kean Wren’s strike from close range.
This historic victory for Wigan Athletic U18s at the new Everton Stadium marks an important milestone in their season, showcasing their resilience and professionalism in a high-profile match. The young Tics will now look to build on this momentum as they return to action in the Professional Development League with a trip to Hull City on Saturday.
