Wigan Athletic welcome Reading to the Brick tomorrow night, and it sparks a return for former Wigan manager Leam Richardson. Going into this one, the mood around the club is of a very grim nature, Ryan Lowe sacked & the first game post that absolute shambles away at Peterborough. Reading arrive in a confident mood, with stable and consistent form.
Wigan Athletic: 22nd
It’s been the biggest form drought in years for Wigan, after no wins in our last 7, and as we all know that gave the board the greenlight to sack Ryan Lowe. I don’t necessarily have much belief for this one, and with Whelan & Barrow’s first match in charge they could be set to struggle.
Reading: 11th
Leam Richardson returns to the Brick for the first time since being dismissed as Wigan boss back in November 2022, and his side find themselves in good form, with a playoff opportunity not out of sight yet. Although, with only one win in their last five could their be a potential struggle tomorrow?
Head-to-Head Record
Wigan Wins: 20
Draws: 12
Reading Wins: 22
Predicted Lineup
Very difficult to predict this week’s lineup based on the managerial change, but knowing how Whelan operated as interim last season I imagine he won’t change much going into tomorrow night. Jack Hunt had a very uninspiring debut away at Peterborough, but he deserves a second chance I think, and going forward it’s a no brainer to keep Joe Taylor up top, he’s been decent.

Curtis’ Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Reading
💭“As a Wigan fan, it’s hard to feel confident going into this one. We haven’t won a game in ages, and the 6–1 hammering at Peterborough at the weekend summed up just how bad things have got. Ryan Lowe paid the price for that defeat, but with Glenn Whelan now taking charge, it’s difficult to see an instant turnaround against decent opposition.
Reading will fancy this, especially with Leam Richardson in their dugout — he knows this club inside out after his time with us, and those familiar faces always seem to come back and haunt Wigan. Add former Latics striker Will Keane into the mix and it just feels like one of those nights.
At best, I can see us grinding out a draw if we dig in and show a bit of pride, but asking for a win feels like a stretch right now. A point would be acceptable – and probably the best we can hope for.“
Charlie’s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Reading
💭” Very little confidence for this one if I’m honest, a draw would be ideal as we need to gain some confidence quickly.”

ChatGPT: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Reading
💭 “I’m going for a draw in this one. Wigan come into the game in poor form and low on confidence after a heavy defeat at the weekend and the sacking of Ryan Lowe. A managerial change so close to the fixture rarely brings instant improvement, and with Glenn Whelan stepping in, this feels more like a damage-limitation job than a platform for a win. Wigan may show some fight at home, but the underlying issues won’t disappear overnight.
Reading, meanwhile, are a more settled side and should be confident of getting something from the game. With former Wigan figures involved on their side, they’ll know exactly what to expect and how to exploit Wigan’s current fragility. I can see Wigan responding enough to avoid defeat, but Reading’s organisation and experience should earn them a share of the points. A 1–1 draw looks the most likely outcome.”
Grok: Wigan Athletic 0-2 Reading
💭 “Wigan’s poor recent form with no wins in their last seven league games, coupled with the recent sacking of manager Ryan Lowe after a heavy 6-1 defeat, leaves them vulnerable against a mid-table Reading side that has lost just two of their last six matches and holds a strong historical edge in this fixture.”
Gemini: Wigan Athletic 1-2 Reading
💭 “While the sacking of Ryan Lowe and the appointment of club stalwarts Glenn Whelan and Graham Barrow as interims will demand a spirited reaction from the squad, Wigan’s confidence is likely shattered after the 6-1 drubbing by Peterborough; facing a Reading side that has scored 11 more goals than them this season (41 vs. 30), the Latics’ fragile defense may struggle to contain the visitors’ attack despite the desperate need for points.”
