- Blackpool FC EFL League One Wigan
Wigan Athletic will host Blackpool at the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in their final home game of the 24/25 season. Earlier this week, Wigan mathematically secured League One safety following their 1-0 win over Rotherham United.
Current Standings and Recent Form
Wigan Athletic: 15th
The Latics approach this game coming off a very big week, after securing League One survival with a 1-0 win over Rotherham. This meeting with the Tangerines isn’t only a derby but it also marks a final home game of the season for Wigan and they will want to give the fans something to remember. The Rotherham game didn’t start as well as planned for Wigan, with a sheer lack of desire going forward, but things quickly changed, when James Carragher, in the 36th’ minute, rose like a salmon to head a gorgeous ball from Owen Dale into the net. The second half was interesting as Wigan attempted to the park the bus, but they quickly changed direction and attempted to push for a second goal, the closest we came was through Jonny Smith hitting just wide off the post.
Blackpool: 10th
Blackpool season has been one, of improvement and consistency, something in which gaffer Steve Bruce deserves plenty of praise for. Last time out for Blackpool saw a narrow 1-2 defeat to Wrexham. Despite scoring a stoppage time constellation, courtesy of Rob Apter, it proved to no avail and it was to little to late. Approaching the clash with Wigan, Blackpool are fairly evenly matched and it will no doubt be a very close match.
Head-to-Head Record
Wigan Wins: 23
Draws: 11
Blackpool Wins: 20
Players to Watch
Wigan Athletic:
- Sam Tickle – Consistent as ever for Sam, as he time and time again comes to Wigan’s rescues defensively.
- James Carragher – After netting another goal versus Rotherham and grabbing MOTM, Carragher will no doubt be Blackpool’s left sides biggest opponent
- Jason Kerr – Wigan skipper and has been massively underrated this campaign, with such solid performances week in and week out.
- Owen Dale – After providing an assist for Carragher on Monday afternoon, he is gonna be on the hunt for more g/a’s and I have faith that Owen will deliver.
Blackpool:
- Oliver Casey – Casey stood out in what wasn’t the best performance by any means, he will make life hard for our attack.
- Lee Evans – The former Wigan man returns to his old stomping ground, and it will be interesting to see the sort of reception he gets from the fans.
- Albie Morgan – An exciting and versatile midfielder, Morgan will no doubt be a constant threat to us on Saturday.
- Rob Apter – Goalscorer vs Wrexham another man to be on the watch for.

Curtis’ Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Blackpool
💭 “Blackpool may be higher in the table and have picked up more wins recently, but they’ve also lost games, including a narrow 2-1 defeat to Wrexham. Wigan, meanwhile, are unbeaten in five and seem to have turned a corner under Ryan Lowe, showing more resilience and confidence, especially going forward with Asamoah Jr. With both sides fairly evenly matched and the added edge of a local rivalry, a draw feels like a fair prediction.”
Charlie’s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-2 Blackpool
💭 “Blackpool are by no means an easy 3 points”. Should be a fairly 50/50 match and I’m nervous that our poor attacking football will deny us the +3. Steve Bruce returns to the Brick and I really think it will be a mixture of emotions.
Ryan’s Prediction (On This Week’s Podcast): Wigan Athletic 1-0 Blackpool
💭 “I think they’ll be brimming with confidence but I can see us winning 1-0 again.”
Fred’s Prediction: Wigan Athletic 1-2 Blackpool
💭 “Wigan score first goal Blackpool score 2 after, Blackpool have a decent run of form lately with some wins and their climb up to 10th place has been incredible so they will be a hard opponent to face considering their recent spectacular run.”

ChatGPT: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Blackpool
“Wigan are solid at the back with a strong defensive record, but they struggle to score, while Blackpool have more firepower but are missing key players through injury.”
Grok: Wigan Athletic 1-1 Blackpool
“I predict a 1-1 draw because Wigan’s solid defense will limit Blackpool’s attack, but their own scoring struggles may prevent a win, resulting in shared points.”
