Goalkeeper Coach Andy Lonergan will leave Wigan Athletic at the end of his contract this summer, bringing his time at the club to a close after one season.
Lonergan arrived at The Brick Community Stadium in June 2024 as a player-coach under then-manager Shaun Maloney, following a three-year stint with Premier League side Everton. Despite being registered as a player, the 41-year-old’s primary focus was on coaching—and he quickly became a key part of the backroom staff.
Over the 2024/25 campaign, Lonergan worked closely with Sam Tickle and Tom Watson. Under his guidance, Tickle enjoyed a standout season, racking up 20 clean sheets in all competitions and earning a spot in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season.
Lonergan’s experience and influence were clear throughout the campaign, and his departure marks the end of a quietly important chapter for the club’s goalkeeping setup.
We would like to wish Andy the very best in whatever comes next—and thank him for his contribution during a transitional and ultimately encouraging season for the Latics.
The club’s retained list is expected to be announced soon, with further updates to follow.
