Northampton Town 1–1 Wigan Athletic
Fosu 33′ | Taylor 90+6′
Attendance: 7,591 (895 Latics fans)
Wigan Athletic brought the curtain down on the 2024/25 League One season in dramatic fashion once again, as Dale Taylor struck a 96th-minute equaliser to earn a point away at Northampton Town and extend Latics’ unbeaten run to eight matches.
With emotions already high on the final day, it took until deep into stoppage time for the travelling 895 Wigan fans to erupt, as Taylor nodded home a deflected James Carragher effort to snatch a deserved share of the spoils at Sixfields Stadium.
It was a scrappy, end-of-season contest where moments of quality proved decisive. The hosts took the lead on 33 minutes, punishing Wigan on the break. After a Latics corner was cleared, Northampton sprang forward with pace, and it was Tariqe Fosu who applied the finishing touch—cutting inside and slotting into the far corner past Sam Tickle.
Despite going behind, Ryan Lowe’s men refused to fold. Taylor, fresh off being crowned Latics’ Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season on Thursday, looked sharp throughout and constantly threatened alongside a lively performance from Asamoah Jr.
Wigan pushed hard after the break and thought they’d found a leveller earlier than they did. Jason Kerr had a header cleared off the line by Mitch Pinnock, while Taylor and Asamoah both saw efforts go close.
Lowe turned to youth from the bench, introducing K’Marni Miller, whose teasing cross from the left nearly caught out Lee Burge, striking the outside of the post in the closing stages.
But just like at Burton in midweek, Latics saved their heroics for the very end. Deep into the 11 minutes of added time, a deflected Carragher shot fell perfectly for Taylor, who reacted quickest in the box to glance the ball home—sparking bedlam in the away end and securing a dramatic finish to the campaign.
There was still time for late controversy as Will Aimson received a straight red card for a late challenge on substitute goalkeeper James Dadge, but it didn’t dampen the mood of a side who have ended the season strongly under Lowe’s leadership.
🗣 Final Thoughts
Wigan finish the 2024/25 campaign unbeaten in their final eight games, demonstrating grit, determination, and belief right to the end. While the season had its ups and downs, the late surge provides optimism for what’s to come.
Now, attention turns to the summer—rebuilding, recruiting, and preparing to push forward next season.
