The Welsh Wiganer to leave?! Sadly, yes.
Wigan Athletic have confirmed that midfielder Scott Smith will depart the club at the end of June, with his contract set to expire on 30th June 2025. The news brings an end to a journey that began back in 2013, when a young Scott joined the Latics Academy aged just 12.
Smith, born and raised in Wigan, became a familiar face in the youth setup, eventually captaining the Under-23s during the 2020–21 season. He made his senior debut in the EFL Cup against Hull City in 2021 and has since gone on to make over 70 appearances for the club in all competitions.
While he may not have been the flashiest name on the teamsheet, Scott’s determination, commitment, and passion for his boyhood club never went unnoticed by the fans. He always gave 100%, wearing the badge with pride — something that’s become increasingly rare in the modern game.
“Scott may not have always been the best player on the Wigan pitch, but his determination and passion for his boyhood club never went unnoticed.”

It’s interesting — and admittedly disappointing — to see a homegrown player like Smith move on, but we wish him nothing but success in whatever comes next.
All the best, Scott! 💙
