Barrow AFC have confirmed the signing of midfielder Scott Smith from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer, effective from July 1, 2025, pending EFL approval. The 24-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract, becoming the Bluebirds’ first acquisition of the summer.
Smith, a Wigan native, spent his entire career to date with his hometown club, making 94 appearances and scoring two goals. He progressed through Wigan’s youth system and debuted professionally in August 2021 during an EFL Cup match against Hull City.
Barrow’s Head Coach, Andy Whing, expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “We’ve been targeting Scott for quite a while now. He played a lot of football in League One last season and possesses qualities we need. Scott loves a tackle, and I think the fans will appreciate his aggressive style of play.”
The move comes as Barrow seek to bolster their midfield following the departure of Robbie Gotts to Doncaster Rovers. Smith’s addition is seen as a strategic step in preparing for the upcoming 2025–26 League Two season.
Wigan Athletic acknowledged Smith’s departure with a message on social media, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
