MATCH REPORT: AFC WIMBLEDON VS WIGAN ATHLETIC

Match Overview / Performance Analysis

Wigan recorded their first away win of the season this afternoon with a dramatic 1-2 win over AFC Wimbledon in the Capital, with a winner in the 87th minute. Wimbledon drop to 8th, and the Latics move up to 15th!

Performance

The mood going into today, was that it was going to be potentially one sides, given Wigan’s recent unstable form, and the fact that Wimbledon have really shone since their promotion from League Two. The first half was interesting Wigan were able to prove early on that they weren’t going to be such an easy opponent, with good attacking threat, matching Wimbledon’s early tempo, registering 6 shots, but their was a real struggle to convert any on target. Going into the second half with the deadlock not broken, it was going to need a big push, but despite their intentions the better start was made by Wimbledon, with many chances, and the 70th’ minute the deadlock was broken via Alistair Smith who hit a left footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom right corner. Assisted from Joe sLewis’s corner. Minutes later a Wigan reshuffle was made after 18 year-old Academy prospect Harrison Bettoni was bought onto the pitch to replace Dara Costelloe. And instantly he was put on free kick duty, and stepped up and converted a left footed shot into the top left corner creating absolute scenes in the Wigan away end. 10 minutes later, he scored AGAIN, netting a right footed shot into the bottom left corner assisted by Paul Mullin following a fast break. The 18 year-old almost single handily won the game for Wigan!
