Wigan Athletic have officially confirmed their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2025/26 campaign, and as expected, it signals the start of what could be a significant summer rebuild at the Brick Community Stadium.
After a season that saw inconsistency and periods of real struggle, decisions have now been made on the futures of several players, with a mixture of contract renewals, departures, and ongoing discussions shaping the early direction of the squad.
A Summer of Change Begins
With multiple players reaching the end of their contracts this summer, the club were always facing a big decision-making period. A number of first-team players were due to be out of contract heading into June, highlighting just how important this retained list was for planning ahead.
The announcement confirms who will remain part of the project going into 2026/27 and who will be moving on.
Players Under Contract for 2026/27
The following players remain under contract heading into next season:
- Sam Tickle
- Tom Watson
- Matteo Spinelli
- James Carragher
- Jon Mellish
- Morgan Fox
- K’Marni Miller
- Kai Payne
- Tobias Brenan
- Fraser Murray
- Dara Costelloe

Contract Talks Ongoing
Wigan have confirmed that discussions are ongoing with several players:
- Matt Smith
- Jensen Weir
- Callum McManaman
- Harrison Bettoni
- Llyton Chapman
- Leo Graham
- Chris Sze
- Adam Moseley
- Joe Adams
This is arguably the most interesting category, with a number of players who could still play a part next season depending on how talks progress.
We will no doubt be keeping a close eye on updates here, particularly with some experienced heads and promising young players involved such as Harrison Bettoni and Adam Moseley.
Players Released
The club have confirmed that the following players will leave upon the expiry of their contracts:
- Jason Kerr
- Will Aimson
- Toby Savin
- Luke Robinson
- Steven Sessegnon
- Tyrese Francois
- Matthew Corran
- Jack Hunt
As always, these decisions won’t have been taken lightly.
Some of these departures may come as no surprise given the season just gone, while others may split opinion among supporters especially Jason Kerr being the main surprise, but there has been lots of speculation about whether he may return to Scotland.
Regardless, they leave with thanks for their efforts in a Latics shirt.
Available for Transfer
Wigan have also confirmed that the following players are available for transfer:
- Joseph Hungbo
- Baba Adeeko
- Jonny Smith
- Ronan Darcy
- Maleace Asamoah
This signals further intent to reshape the squad, with the club clearly open to moving players on as part of the rebuild.
