The countdown to the 2026/27 Sky Bet League One season is officially underway, with Wigan Athletic now knowing exactly who stands between them and a push towards the Championship.
Following the conclusion of the EFL Play-Offs, the full 24-team League One line-up has been confirmed, bringing together a fascinating mix of former Premier League clubs, recent Championship sides, ambitious newcomers and familiar rivals.
For Latics supporters, it promises to be another highly competitive campaign packed with big away days, historic stadiums and several clubs carrying genuine promotion ambitions.
New Faces Join The Division
Four clubs arrive from League Two after securing promotion.
- Bromley
- MK Dons
- Cambridge United
- Notts County
Bromley will be competing in League One for the first time in their history, while Cambridge United return at the first attempt after earning promotion back from League Two. MK Dons and Notts County also return to the third tier, adding more depth to an already competitive division.
Championship Heavyweights Drop Down
Three clubs arrive from the Championship and immediately become some of the biggest names in the division.
- Leicester City
- Oxford United
- Sheffield Wednesday
Leicester’s presence is undoubtedly the headline story. Just ten years after one of football’s greatest achievements by winning the Premier League title, the Foxes will now be visiting the Brick Community Stadium in League One.
Sheffield Wednesday also bring significant stature to the league, with Hillsborough remaining one of English football’s most iconic grounds, while Oxford United will be looking to bounce straight back after relegation.
The Teams Staying Put
Joining Wigan Athletic among the clubs remaining in League One are:
- Barnsley
- Blackpool
- Bradford City
- Burton Albion
- Doncaster Rovers
- Huddersfield Town
- Leyton Orient
- Luton Town
- Mansfield Town
- Peterborough United
- Plymouth Argyle
- Reading
- Stevenage
- Stockport County
- Wycombe Wanderers
Several of these sides were involved in the promotion race last season, meaning Latics will once again face a division packed with quality and experience.
Big Away Days Await
There is no shortage of attractive away trips for Wigan supporters.
Visits to Hillsborough, the King Power Stadium, Kenilworth Road, Home Park and Oakwell all stand out on the fixture list, while clashes against Blackpool, Stockport County and Huddersfield Town are likely to attract strong travelling support from the Latics faithful.
The division also contains a number of clubs with Premier League experience, highlighting just how strong League One has become in recent years.

Latics supporters won’t have to wait long to find out the schedule.
The EFL has confirmed that the 2026/27 League One fixtures will be released on Thursday 25 June at 12pm, with the new league campaign beginning in August.
