Wigan Athletic made it back-to-back Easter weekend wins and mathematically secured Sky Bet League One safety with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rotherham United at the Brick Community Stadium.
James Carragher’s first-half header — his second of the season — proved the difference as Ryan Lowe’s side made it six points from six following Friday’s away win at Shrewsbury. The result also marked the first time since November that Latics have registered consecutive league victories.
⚽ The Goal
The decisive moment came on 36 minutes. After a spell of pressure, Owen Dale swung in a deep corner from the left. Carragher rose highest at the back post, guiding his header back across goal into the far corner, via a couple of deflections.
📈 First Half Dominance
Latics started brightly and thought they’d taken the lead inside five minutes, only for Dale Taylor’s headed effort to be ruled out for a foul on Rotherham ‘keeper Dillon Phillips. At the other end, the visitors had a few half-chances, with Kayode and Nombe both going close, but Luke Robinson and Sam Tickle stood firm.
Will Aimson tested Phillips from distance, while Maleace Asamoah Jr also stung the palms of the Rotherham stopper before the corner that led to Carragher’s goal.
Rotherham responded before the break, with Malik Wilks heading inches wide and Tickle pulling off a crucial point-blank save from Nombe to preserve the lead.
🧱 Second Half Resilience
Latics continued to look the better side after the interval. Weir, Asamoah, and Dale all had chances to double the lead, but Phillips stood strong in goal. At the other end, Jonson Clarke-Harris was denied by a brilliant block from Carragher.
Substitute Jonny Smith had a couple of late efforts to seal the win, while Baba Adeeko impressed in midfield, driving the team forward as Rotherham pushed for an equaliser.
But Latics saw the game out professionally to complete the league double over the Millers and finish off a perfect Easter weekend.
