Wigan Athletic have decided not to pursue striker Sam Dalby after it became clear that League One rivals Bolton Wanderers were already far down the line in discussions to secure the 24-year-old’s signature.
Dalby, who has impressed at Wrexham in recent seasons with his link-up play and physical presence, had been on the radar of several clubs this summer, including the Latics. However, sources suggest that Wigan chose not to table a formal offer once they learned of Bolton’s advanced interest.
It’s understood that Wigan had done background work on the forward and admired his technical ability and attitude, but the club quickly realised that any potential approach would likely be in vain due to Bolton’s head start in negotiations.
A move to the Trotters would mark a step up for Dalby, joining a side consistently in the promotion mix and looking to add depth across their forward line.
