Wigan Athletic backed up a solid point away at Wycombe on Saturday with a crucial 2-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at The Brick Community Stadium. First Half Dominance
Latics made a strong start, controlling possession and creating early chances. The breakthrough came 15 minutes in, as Toby Sibbick played a pinpoint pass through the Huddersfield defence, allowing Dale Taylor to round Lee Nicholls and slot home coolly.
Wigan continued to press, with Jonny Smith and Owen Dale looking lively on the flanks. Smith came close to doubling the lead, cutting inside and curling a shot towards the top corner, only for Nicholls to make a fine save.
Just before half-time, the second goal arrived. Smith again caused problems down the right, delivering a dangerous cross into the box. Dale controlled the ball superbly before smashing it into the corner, opening his account for Latics in style.
Second Half Response
Huddersfield responded quickly after the break. Five minutes into the second half, Dion Charles turned sharply and whipped in a dangerous cross, which Callum Marshall poked past Sam Tickle to bring the visitors back into the game.
With momentum shifting, Town pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Josh Koroma fired wide after breaking down the left, while Wiles went close with a late header.
However, Maloney’s men held firm, with Will Aimson and Jason Kerr – making his 100th appearance for the club – leading by example at the back. Tawanda Chirewa nearly wrapped it up for Latics with a curling effort that narrowly missed the top corner.
As the final whistle blew, it was a massive three points for Wigan, keeping them in the fight to climb up the League One table.

A spectacular first half from the Latics was enough to seal the win against Huddersfield Town, despite a scrappy second half. But that was a long overdue win! Onto reading on Saturday.
